Vintagely Velma

Ever since I was a child, I knew I wanted to go into entrepreneurship even before I knew what it meant. Seeing that my grandmother was a business owner, I figured this journey was definitely meant to be. Formerly KLT Vintage & Retro founded in 2016, Vintagely Velma was created to honor my late great grandmother Velma Norman and her legacy as a business owner.

Who Is Velma?

Velma Norman was born June 30, 1920 in the state of Georgia. Velma was orphaned at age 10 when her mother Ida Bell Norman died November 1, 1929. Left to live with a family member, Velma endured abuse during her youth. After marrying my grandfather Holsie McKay, Velma had her first child and worked as a laundress. Velma and her son moved to Chicago, IL during the early 1940's. By the 1950's, Velma owned and ran two separate businesses on the city's southside; a hotel for professional women and a dry cleaning business.

After falling ill, Velma was unable to tend to her businesses. Velma died, ironically on the same date as her mother, on November 1, 2000.

Vintagely Velma was created in 2019 to continue the business owning
